This 4-week course starting on November 25th is rich in seasonal mood, perfect for students wanting to deepen their understanding of light, value, form, and color in transitional late autumn settings.

Students will explore the dramatic beauty of chiaroscuro and candlelight, using watercolor for softness and atmosphere and gouache for highlights, edge control, and opacity. 

Students will focus on building form and expressing mood through lighting, using late autumn’s inherent introspection and natural palette and look to painters like Vermeer and others known for their dramatic use of light and shadow for inspiration.

Paints:

• Watercolors tubes

• Gouache tubesTools:

• Watercolor paper (300 lb sheets)

• Watercolor Pads

• Variety of brushes

• Soft pencil, kneaded eraser

• Battery-operated candle or small light source (optional)

• Reference photos (still life, interior, self-portrait, figure)

By the end of the course, students will:

• Understand chiaroscuro principles and use them to model form in candlelit settings

• Use watercolor and gouache together to control softness and sharpness

• Mix muted, warm palettes evocative of autumn and low light

• Render figures, still life, or interior spaces with believable and emotional lighting

• Compose and complete a personal, atmospheric autumn-themed painting
