This 8-week class with Alexa Saxton Thomas is designed for both new and returning students, a weekday drawing and painting class builds confidence through observation while developing strong technical skills and personal expression. Working primarily in graphite, charcoal, ink, pastel, watercolor and gouache students will explore a wide variety of subjects from life, learning how to see with greater accuracy and draw with confidence.

This course places a strong emphasis on drawing as both a finished art form and the foundation for painting. Students will spend more time developing longer drawings and paintings while also practicing quick observational studies.

Throughout the series we will explore:

  • Seeing light through value and shadow

  • Proportion, measuring, and sighting techniques

  • Gesture and expressive mark-making

  • One and two-point perspective

  • Composition and design

  • Form through line and tone

  • Texture and edges

Subjects will include:

  • Botanical studies and natural forms

  • Seasonal still lifes

  • Architectural interiors and windows

  • Portraits and the figure from a live model

  • Personal objects and meaningful compositions

  • Outdoor sketching (weather permitting)

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Edgar Degas, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh, Pierre Bonnard, Giacometti, Andrew Wyeth, and David Hockney, Ruth Asawa, and more, each class combines demonstrations, art history, and individualized instruction in a supportive studio environment.

Whether you are picking up a pencil for the first time or refining years of experience, this class will strengthen your observational skills and deepen your understanding of drawing as a powerful and expressive language.
