The Painting School is so excited to offer artists of all levels of experience the unbelievable opportunity to better understand the color wheel and color theory, learn color mixing and create chromatic grays with one of our favorite artists and art teachers - Xico Greenwald!

Let's use the three primary colors to mix three secondary colors- middle orange, middle purple, middle green. 

Then, using those six colors, as well as white, let's combine complementary colors together to create a variety of chromatic grays. 

Let's use a grid-based design to explore chromatic grays.

This project will invite participants to become more aware of color-wheel concepts, including complementary color relationships, saturation levels, value gradations, color temperatures, and even demonstrate the subjectivity of color through simultaneous contrast effects. My hope is students will leave this workshop with fresh confidence in their color mixing abilities.

Xico Greenwald (b. 1977) is a New York City–based artist. He has exhibited at George Billis Gallery, Nancy Margolis Gallery, Alice Gauvin Gallery and Thompson Giroux Gallery. He has curated exhibitions at Queens College Art Center, Long Island University’s Selena Gallery and Westbeth Gallery. He has taught at The New York Studio School, Pratt Institute, ICA Italy, Rider University and Mount Gretna School of Art. He is currently Professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY. His art writing has been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Spectator, The New York Sun and artcritical.com. He earned a BA from Bard College and an MFA from Brooklyn College, CUNY.
